The above agencies are running a scheme to sponsor Welsh speaking students on environmental courses in the University of Wales.

Purpose

• Encourage Welsh speakers to gain relevant environmental qualifications
• Create within the agencies an enhanced Welsh speaking conservation/field staff capability
• Promote closer links with universities in Wales and help develop suitable environmental courses to protect the environment of Wales
• Contribute to the employment market in Wales by providing career opportunities for Welsh-speaking graduates.

The current scheme

The agencies will provide scholarships of £1,000 for Welsh-speaking students following undergraduate and postgraduate courses. At present the eligible courses are:

• University of Wales Bangor, Diploma/MA in Countryside Management
• Universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Swansea, Glamorgan, Harper Adams - degree courses such as Geography, Biology, Agriculture, Rural Studies, Earth Science, Rural Planning, Marine Studies.

The agencies will be involved in the selection process for eligible students for the award. Students will be encouraged to carry out project work in fields relevant to the agencies as part of their course. Students are required to take a proportion of the modules through the medium of Welsh where these are available. During the study period, students will carry out a work placement of 5 weeks with one of the agencies (4 weeks for post-graduate students).

Payment

Normally, the scholarship will be paid in 2 stages: £500 after successfully completing the first term, and £500 at the end of the course, subject to satisfactory completion of the course. A £500 bursary is payable to degree students to carry out a work placement after the second year of their course.

Remote Sensing Scientist – Ocean Colour, Wellington

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) is a leading environmental research institute and key provider of atmospheric, freshwater and marine research and consultancy services in New Zealand.
NIWA has an X-band satellite reception facility and are active in research to develop, validate and apply remotely-sensed data products in a wide range of atmospheric and oceanographic studies.
We are seeking an accomplished researcher with a research degree in remote sensing to develop ocean colour research at NIWA. The successful applicant will have a proven history of active research in ocean colour with a high-level and broad understanding of satellite observations and experience in the processing and application of satellite data. A proven publication record is also expected.
The ability and experience to take a leading role in the development and validation of remotely-sensed ocean colour products in the coastal, inland and open-ocean areas around New Zealand is required. As is, the skills to develop and test models for the derivation of products from satellite remotely-sensed data. Experience with writing funding proposals or pursuing consultancy opportunities in related disciplines would be advantageous.

You will work with the Engineering Geology and Geohazard team, which provides integrated interpretations of geophysical and geological data for engineering site characterisation and marine geohazards and will develop a sound knowledge of the use and role of exploration 3D and rig site seismic data in Top Hole interpretation and well design. Candidates must have a good first degree in Geoscience and preferably a Masters degree specialising in Geophysics. Project management, good report writing, team work and the ability to interact directly with clients are essential skills. Knowledge of work station interpretation of 3D and 2D UHR seismic data will be required.

full-time Research Technician position is available at the Romberg Tiburon Center (RTC, http://rtc.sfsu.edu/), San Francisco State University (SFSU, http://www.sfsu.edu/). The successful applicant will work with scientists, graduate and undergraduate students in studies directed at understanding the carbon cycle in marine environments. The Biogeochemistry Laboratory at RTC employs natural C isotopes as environmental tracers; previous experience with natural-abundance isotope work is hence a strong plus, but is not required. Major duties are to: operate and maintain preparatory vacuum lines; help oversee operation of the RTC Elemental Analysis Facility; analyze environmental samples using standard chemical techniques; prepare for, and partake in research cruises; and undertake day-to-day responsibilities for the basic functioning of the laboratory.
The successful applicant must have at least a B.Sc. (preferably M.Sc.) degree in chemistry, marine chemistry, or a related field, with experience in chemical analysis preferably with oceanographic/environmental analytical methods. Previous experience with vacuum line work is a strong plus. The candidate must be technically competent, and have the ability to work independently and carefully. The position also requires high degree of organization, excellent communication skills, and ability to go out to sea.
This is a full-time temporary position with initial funding for 24 months. Continuation of this position is subject to funding. Wild Bottlenose Dolphin Research Internships

The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP), based at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, is the _world's longest-running wild dolphin research program._ The program's goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of populations of small cetaceans, as well as the natural and anthropogenic factors that impact them. The SDRP uses an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach in conducting studies of bottlenose dolphins within Sarasota Bay, Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor, and the Gulf of Mexico coastal waters.

In terms of programming and development skills, you should be able to display an understanding and aptitude for using of one or more of the following: ArcObjects, Visual Basic, SQL, .NET, XML. You should also be familiar with working with RDBMS. Key to this role will be the use of this knowledge to integrate systems and build software customisations to make geographical information and analysis more easily accessible. Experience of web based technologies and solutions is desirable although not essential.
